Procedure

Step 1: Open Terminal App

Open Terminal on your Mac by doing one of the following:

• Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Terminal in the search field, then click on Terminal.

• In the Finder, open the /Applications/Utilities folder, then double-click Terminal.

Step 2: Install CLI

Copy and paste (or type) the following line into the Terminal app:

bash <( curl -sL https://particle.io/install-cli )

If that works, you should get a message that Particle was installed to “/Users/yourname/bin/particle”. Make a note of the directory that Particle was installed to (e.g. in this case /Users/yourname/bin/particle) before closing the Terminal app.

Then to check that Particle is installed correctly, reopen Terminal and type in the following:

particle --version

You should get a message with the Particle version number (e.g. 3.38.1).

If that works, the CLI is ready to use and you can skip the rest of the guide. If you get any other kind of message, continue to the steps below to finish installation.

Step 3: Particle not found

If you get the message “command not found: particle” then we have to manually launch particle from the correct directory.

First, we need to navigate to the directory where particle was installed. To do this, type in:

cd /Users/yourname/bin/particle

but replacing the directory “/Users/yourname/bin/particle” with the actual directory that Particle was installed to in step 2.

then, to see if you can run Particle from that directory, type in the following:

./particle --version

If this works, then Particle is installed and you can go ahead and use Particle as described in other guides - except that each time you use the “particle” command, you will need to add “./” in front (for example, to start the process of adding a WiFi network you would type “./particle usb start-listening” instead. You will also need to navigate to the right directory again (with “cd /Users/…”) each time you open Terminal.

Step 4: Python

If you get a message about installing Python, follow the prompts to download and install Python. Once the installation is complete, return to step 2 to finish installation of the CLI.

Step 5. Rosetta

If you get a message that you need ‘Rosetta’, then follow the steps below

Install Rosetta

Open the Terminal app again and type:

softwareupdate --install-rosetta

Configure Terminal to use Rosetta

• Go to the Terminal app in Finder, and right-click on it (or click while holding mac button).

• Check the box marked ‘open with Rosetta’

• Close any Terminal windows you have open, then relaunch the Terminal app.

• Go back to step 2 to install the CLI.

Procedure

Requirements:

• USB-B cable (or micro-USB cable if not available).

• Computer (Windows or Mac)

Step 1: Download and install the CLI tool

Step 2: Connect with USB

Step 3: Download system files

Download the following files

• erase_all

• ROEST default firmware.bin

Step 4: Open Command Prompt / Terminal app

On Windows

On Mac

• In Finder, locate the folder containing the firmware.

• Right click (or hold the Mac button and click) on the folder, go to ‘services’, then click ‘New Terminal at Folder’.

Step 5: Enter DFU mode

Turn on the roaster and put it in DFU mode:

In the Command Prompt or Terminal window, type:

particle usb dfu

You will get the message “Done” if it is successful.

Step 6: Erase settings

While the device is in DFU mode, type the following into your Command Prompt or Terminal window:

particle flash --usb erase_all.bin

This will erase the WiFi settings and clear the EEPROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory).

Step 7: Reinstall default firmware

Put the machine back in DFU mode by typing:

particle usb dfu

into the Command Prompt or Terminal window. Next, type in

particle flash --usb ROEST-default-firmware.bin

This will reinstall our firmware. The roaster should automatically restart when this is complete.

Step 8: Connect to WiFi network

You now need to give the roaster new WiFi credentials. You can easily do this over USB while you’re connected to the roaster. To do this, first type in:

particle usb start-listening

to put the roaster into WiFi Setup mode. Next, type:

particle serial wifi

and follow the prompts to connect the roaster to the network.

About Warning Messages

Warning messages are to help you diagnose an issue with your roaster. See below to learn why the different warning messages appear.

Hatch Open

This message is connected to the inductive sensor related to the drop handle door. It tells you that the drop handle is in the upward position. The message will show up when the drop handle is moved away from the inductive sensor (the sensor detects movement in front of it when the drop door is closed).

Something could be wrong if:

• You still get this message when moving the drop handle to the downward position; your proximity sensor could need adjustment or may need replacement. The result is the roaster not heating up.

Follow this guide to check if your proximity sensor needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Charge Handle Open

This message shows up when the charge handle is lifted (hence, movement is detected in front of the proximity sensor).

Something could be wrong if:

• You get this warning message without lifting the charge handle/with the charge handle in the resting position.

• The roasting process does not start when lifting the charge handle (and no warning message appears).

The proximity sensor could be faulty (sometimes malfunctioning due to too much heat), or the two proximity sensors for the drop and charge handle have been switched around. If the proximity sensor is broken, tapping charge in the top left corner can start the roasting process instead.

How to determine if a proximity sensor is broken:

• Remove the top plate so you can see the sensors.

• Move the drop or charge handle to see if a red light flashes on the sensor. If it does, it works.

• If there is no red light, try to move the proximity sensor closer to the drop or charge handle using a 12-millimeters spanner.

• Check the connection on the PCB, ensuring that the cable hasn’t been pulled off or isn’t properly plugged in.

• Check that the proximity sensors for the drop and charge handle haven’t been swapped.

• If none of the above fixes it, your proximity sensor is broken. Buy a new one or contact support if your machine is still under warranty.

Bean Dropper Error

This error appears when the machine tries to open the drop door, but the sensor can not detect that the door has opened.

Most commonly this means that the proximity sensor is not working properly, and needs to be adjusted or replaced, by following this guide. If the error was caused by a sensor issue, then the drop door will still open and release the beans.

If the drop door does not open, then the problem is the drop door motor. Contact support for help.

Chassis Fan Failure

Related to the chassis fan at the back of the roaster. If you get this message, first check your chassis fan settings. The warning message will appear when the fan’s speed is detected to be under 2000 RPM, so check to see if the settings in the service menu have been lowered somehow. If not, you need to remove the top plate and check the following:

• Connection from cable to PCB. Is the cable properly attached to the PCB? Check that all three pegs are correctly in. Use this photo for reference.

• Extension cable connection. Is the extension cable properly connected to the fan cable? This can loosen over time; make sure the cable is firmly connected, and all pegs are correctly attached.

• Check that the fan is running. It is easiest to see if you turn the roaster on and off. You can see it either from above, looking inside the roaster, or through the fan gritter at the back of the roaster.

• If the fan is not running and everything is connected correctly, your extension cable is most likely broken. In some rare cases, the fan itself can be broken. Contact support.

Heater Fan Failure

Related to the heater fan on the right-hand side of the roaster. The warning message shows up if the speed drops below 3000 RPM, so first, check your settings to see that it hasn't been lowered somehow. If the settings are ok, you need to remove the top plate and check the following:

• Check the cable connection on the PCB. Is the cable properly connected, with all pegs firmly attached in the holes?

• Contact support.

Exhaust fan failure

This warning message is triggered if the exhaust fan’s motor stops spinning. If you get this message, check the following:

• Cool down the roaster completely, and remove the ventilation hose from the back so you can see into the exhaust ventilation exit. You should be able to see the impellers from there. With protection eye wear on, turn the roaster on and off to see if the impellers are spinning around. The warning message is related to the impellers on the left-hand side. The right-hand side impellers will affect bean cooling but have no warning message on-screen.

• If your impellers are not spinning, contact support to troubleshoot.

Chamber Motor Stuck

On older firmware, you may see MOTOR IS STUCK

This warning message is related to the inductive sensor monitoring the chamber motor rotation. The message is triggered if the proximity sensor detects that rotation is too slow according to a calculation based on the expected speed of the motor and the motor gear ratio.

First, check your motor gear ratio settings in the service menu; it should say 12:1 unless you have an older machine (p16_30 and earlier models). If you have an older model check your correct setting here.

- If your drum moves back and forth, the proximity sensor is most likely placed too far away from the RPM plate and needs to be adjusted. You can use this guide for reference but move it closer to the RPM plate instead of changing the sensor.

Can’t connect to the ROEST server

This warning message is triggered if the machine is unable to connect to the MQTT server (roest server). This can happen if the wifi network of the machine has a bad internet connection or our server is down. Most of the time, it is not related to anything wrong with the device.

Server Login Failed

This warning message means that the server is not permitting the machine to connect to the server. If this happens, please reset the metadata on the machine. Enter the service menu, tap on ‘Settings’, and then tap ‘Clear Metadata’.

If this doesn’t solve the issue, then please contact support for further help with this error.

Server Connection Lost

This warning message is triggered if the machine was previously connected to the server, but is no longer connected. The machine will keep trying to re-connect after the error is triggered.

If you see this message, it is most likely due to a problem with the internet connection rather than with the machine. Ensure the wifi antenna is connected on the rear of your roaster. Check the wifi signal strength, and the internet connection on your network. Try positioning the router closer to the roaster to improve the connection.

Note that if the machine is disconnected for longer periods of time, some roasting logs will not be stored.

Max Temperature Reached

This warning message is triggered if the ET sensor reads a temperature of 320 degrees or more. The heater will be disabled until the temperature drops below this threshold.

During normal roasting, the air temperature in the drum should not reach this high. Adjust the roast profile if necessary to prevent overheating.

Machine Overheat

On older firmware, you may see MACHINE IS TOO HOT! RESTART!

This message is triggered by the PCB becoming too hot (if the temperature sensor on the PCB reports 65 degrees or more). Reasons:

• The chassis fan mesh needs to be cleaned. If too much dirt and dust have been collected in the fan mesh, the chassis fan won't be able to do its job correctly. Make sure to clean the fan mesh regularly.

• Warning message combined with chassis fan error: Go back to the checkpoint for the chassis fan warning message.

• Remove the top plate and check the orange hose from the chamber to the back of the roaster to see if it is damaged or not correctly attached to both ends (perhaps leaking heat somewhere?).

Fan Error Detected! Restart!

This message will be triggered along with chassis fan failure and heater fan failure warning messages.

Possible heater problem detected…

If you get this message, it means that the machine supplied 100% power to the heating element for more than 10 seconds, and the temperature is still below 40 degrees C. You can ignore this message by clicking on it, and the machine should keep working if this was triggered by a false positive. If the machine still doesn’t heat up, see this guide.

No server connection

When you get this message on the screen the roaster is still connected to your wifi but the connection to the internet / our server is disrupted. If the roaster manages to connect within 60 seconds then this message will disappear - if it takes longer then the message will stay active to notify you. As long as the roaster manages to connect within 2 minutes then the log will be updated. If this message often appears then your wifi connection is bad or the internet connection is unstable.

Warning WiFi connection lost.

When you get this message on the screen, the roaster has lost the internet connection (or has spent more than 10 seconds trying to connect during startup. If the roaster manages to connect within 60 seconds, this message will disappear - if it takes longer, it will stay active to notify you. You can then see if the wifi symbol is stable at the lower left corner. As long as the roaster connects within 2 minutes, the log will be updated. If this message often appears, then your wifi connection is bad, or the internet connection is unstable.

The firmware can crash if the roaster for example loses wifi during a firmware update or if the roaster is turned on/off very fast.

Symptoms:

• The roaster is stuck in update firmware mode for more than 15 minutes.

• The led lights are turning on but not the motor or the screen.

Solution:

1. By placing the roaster in safe mode the roaster will attempt to download the firmware and reinstall it. Please follow this guide for instructions.

2. If placing the roaster in safe mode didn’t help, then proceed to step 2 - reinstalling the default firmware by USB. Follow this guide for instructions.

1. Check your power supply: Is the power cord properly connected, or has a fuse blown?

2. Check the fuse at the back of the roaster. Use this guide for reference. Check that they are intact and have not blown. However, they might have blown, but it is not visible, so try to switch the fuse with the spare one and see if the roaster works now.

3. If nothing changes, the next step is to remove the left-hand side panel.

4. Turn the roaster on, but make sure not to touch any cables. Check that the power pack has a green light:

   • If there is a steady green light: The power pack works and receives power.

   • If the green light is flashing: The power pack works but is having issues delivering a signal to the PCB.

   • If there is no green light: The power pack could be broken or is not receiving power. Double-check that the machine’s power supply works before replacing the power pack.

5. If the green light is constant or flashing, continue with the steps.

6. Check the fuse on the PCB (the green circuit board on top of the roaster). The best way to see if the coil inside is broken is to flash a flashlight from the other side. If the coil is broken, change the fuse.

7. If the fuse on the PCB is intact, there is something wrong with the connection between the power pack and PCB. It might be the PCB itself or a component connected to the PCB that causes problems.

To test this, remove all the connections from the PCB except the power cable and screen cable, and turn the roaster on:

• If the LED light on the power pack is still flashing green, it is probably the PCB. You can check this by removing the power cable and turning the roaster on. If the light is now a constant green, the PCB itself is causing the issues and needs to be replaced.

• If the LED light on the power pack is a constant green, one of the components attached to the PCB is causing the issue. Reattach one component at a time, turning the roaster on in between to check the LED light on the power pack. If the LED light starts flashing after reattaching a component, this is the component causing the issue. Replace the component. On rare occasions, it can be a chip on the PCB causing the issue, not the component itself.

Instructions:

Step by step

• Remove the top plate

• Remove the left-hand side panels

• Optional: Remove the orange hose for a better view.

When you have a clear view of the insides of your roaster from the left-hand side, locate the bearing. It is located in the middle of the roaster near the RPM plate and pulley. You will start by adjusting the grub screw on the bearing. The video below showing how to align the paddles starts from this stage:

Procedure:

1. Check your fan settings. On the touchscreen menu go to MACHINE SETTINGS and check that bean cooling % is set to 90%, and bean cooling idle is set to a minimum of 50%. You can adjust it higher if you wish, and see if this helps.

2. Let your roaster cool completely down, and remove the exhaust pipe in the back.

3. The easiest thing to check is that the impeller at the exhaust exit at the back of the roaster is spinning. The right impeller when facing the back of the roaster belongs to the bean cooling system. If this is not spinning when the roaster is turned on, you need a new motor.

4. If the impeller is spinning, the next step is to check that the hose transporting air between the cooling tray and the exhaust exit is intact. This requires you to remove the top plate and left-hand side panel when facing the front of the roaster. The hose you’re inspecting is shown in the photo below.

5. If the hose is damaged or this doesn’t solve your problem, please contact support for further investigation.

1. Open Settings.

2. Tap the Network & internet option.

3. Select Hotspot & tethering.

4. Tap on Wi-Fi hotspot/Personal hotspot.

5. This page has options for turning the hotspot feature on and off.

6. Select Configure hotspot and give these credentials:

   Hotspot name: roest

   Password: roest321

iPhone

This must be done in two steps.

Step 1: Change the name of the device

(You can and should change back once you do not need the hotspot anymore).

From the Home screen, tap Settings > General > About. Tap Name to change the name of your iPhone's personal hotspot.

Here is a detailed guide on how to change the hotspot name if you’re in need.

Step 2: Activate and set a password

Go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot.

Tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.

To change the password:

Tap the Wi-Fi Password field.

To change the password, edit the info then tap Done

Set the password to “roest321”

Issue:

The air temperature moves up and down instead of following the target, shown in the image on the right. The reason behind this is the resettable fuse on the heating element.

This fuse will turn off the heating element if the heat applied is too high. When the temperature has been lowered, the heating element will be turned on again. Hence the fluctuating graph.

The reasons behind this could be:

• The machine is not getting enough airflow. The fan related to the machine’s cooling is called the chassis fan/cooling fan (nr. 11 in the image below) and is located on the back plate of the roaster behind a mesh gritter. This gritter and the fan must be cleaned regularly so that air can circulate properly through the roaster.

• The setting for the heating fan is too low. We recommend keeping it at 3400 RPM, but if you experience problems with the heating element, you can try increasing it to 3500 or 3600 RPM. To change the setting for the heater fan, you must enter the service menu. In the menu, you can adjust the fan under Settings.

• 3) The fuse on the heating element itself is damaged/faulty. The solution is to change the heating element. If you’re having repeated problems with your heating element, please read through this post on heating elements and their lifetime.

Depending on your model, the ratio between the two pulleys differs. On nearly all roasters up to p16, we had a 1:1 gear ratio, meaning the two pulleys were of equal size.

Check your gear ratio settings in the service menu if you are experiencing issues with the motor, either by a warning message on the touchscreen, odd movements, or sounds from the drum. What gear ratio your machine should have depends on the model (what pulley ratio it has) and if the PCB has the r25 chip or not:

• 1:1 gearing + r25 on PCB = 1:1 gear ratio in service menu

• 2:1 gearing + r25 on PCB = 2:1 gear ratio in service menu

• 3:1 gearing + r25 on PCB = 3:1 gear ratio in service menu

• 1:1 gearing – (minus) r25 on PCB = 4:1 gear ratio in service menu

• 2:1 gearing - (minus) r25 on PCB = 8:1 gear ratio in service menu

• 3:1 gearing - (minus) r25 on PCB = 12:1 gear ratio in service menu

The led light and main fans turn on – but not the screen and the paddles are not moving. The issue is that the firmware has somehow been made corrupt and a new version needs to be installed.

Procedure

The first step is to see if the firmware can be fixed by entering “safe mode.”

If putting the roaster into safe mode doesn’t work, proceed with reinstalling the firmware.

Requirements:

• USB-A or USB-micro.

• Computer

Step 1: Download and install the CLI tool

• For windows: Windows CLI installer

• For Mac/Linux: Installing CLI on a Mac

Step 2: Connect with usb

Connect the USB to the roaster. If you have a USB-A, there is a slot in the back of the roaster. If you want to use a USB-micro, remove the USB from the PCB and insert yours. See the pictures below if you are unsure.

Step 3: Open Command Prompt/Terminal

On Windows

• Click on ‘Start’ or press the Windows button, type cmd in the search bar, and open the program.

On Mac

• Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock, type Terminal in the search field, then click Terminal.

Step 4: Log into Particle

In the command prompt/Terminal app, write

particle cloud login

and press enter.

Wait for a few moments for the program to start, and then enter login information when prompted. You can create your own login at particle.io if you wish, or just use the credentials from our demo account:

Email: roest@gmail.com (not an actual email)

Password: roest321

It should look like this once done:

The cd.. was used only to go to the root folder for better visibility and is not essential.

Step 5: DFU-mode

Turn on the roaster and put it in DFU mode:

In the command prompt, write:

particle usb dfu

You will get the message “Done” if it is successful.

If this doesn’t work, then do it manually:

1. Press and hold both the RESET and SETUP buttons simultaneously.

2. Release only the RESET button while holding the SETUP button.

3. Release the SETUP button once the device begins to blink YELLOW

Step 5: Particle update

The first test is simply writing

particle update

in the command prompt and pressing enter.

After this step, your roaster might start to work again. If it’s still unresponsive, continue to the next step.

Step 6: download system files

Download the following files

• System file part 1

• System file part 2

• ROEST default firmware.bin

In the command prompt or Terminal, enter the folder where you downloaded the files.

On Windows

Open the folder with the files, and click the address bar (as shown in the picture below)

Write cmd and press enter.

The command prompt is opened automatically in the correct folder, like in the image below.

On Mac

In Finder, locate the folder containing the firmware.

Right click (or hold the Mac button and click) on the folder, go to ‘services’, then click ‘New Terminal at Folder’.

Step 7: enter DFU mode

Enter DFU mode again: (Write “particle usb dfu” in the command prompt, or follow the instructions in Step 5 above to enter DFU mode manually).

When the device is in DFU mode, run these three lines: (copy each one into the command prompt and press enter)

• particle flash --usb p1-system-part1@2.0.1.bin

• particle flash --usb p1-system-part2@2.0.1.bin

• particle flash --usb ROEST-default-firmware.bin

This will update the device to DeviceOS 2.0.1 and install our firmware.
The device should automatically restart and connect to Wi-fi.

It should look like this (just with 2.0.1 instead of 1.4.4 and ROEST-default-firmware.bin instead of p1-tinker@1.4.4.bin):

The microprocessor now has the default firmware. You might have to restart.

The led light and main fans turn on – but not the screen, and the paddles are not moving. The issue is that the firmware has been made corrupt, and a new version must be installed. The first step is to try to put the roaster into safe mode, as described below.

Procedure

Step 1

Take off the top plate. Be careful with the cable connected to the encoder.

Step 2

Turn on the roaster and put it in safe mode:

1. Press and hold both the RESET and SETUP buttons simultaneously.

2. Release only the RESET button while holding the SETUP button.

3. Release the SETUP button once the device blinks Magenta (purple-ish). If the led light blinks yellow, you have held the SETUP button too long.

Alternatively, if you connect your roaster to your computer with a USB, you can put your roaster in safe mode with a simple code. Turn on your roaster (while connected via USB), open the command prompt or terminal, and write in:

particle usb safe-mode

Step 4

The roaster should now automatically connect to the console and re-install the firmware.

Step 5

If the roaster restarts and is operational – turn it off and reinstall the top plate.

If not – use our guide called “Reinstalling default firmware.”

We use Particle Doctor for reinstalling default firmware and resetting Wi-Fi keys.

This procedure is used if the roaster is unable to connect to WiFi. This is the last resort and should only be done if you have followed this guide and been redirected here to use Particle Doctor. Typically, this is needed if it’s impossible to get a stable connection to the Photon when giving the Wi-Fi credentials with the Particle app (iPhone/android), Roest Wi-Fi Setup app (android), or using a web browser.

Procedure

This procedure requires the top plate to be removed while the power is on. Only the reset/setup button on the PCB must be touched. Caution is critical, and ROEST assumes no responsibility for safety.

Requirements:

• A computer

• USB cable (A type or micro)

• 2-millimeters hexagonal key to remove the top plate with

Step by step:

• Download the CLI tool:

  • For windows: Windows CLI installer

  • For Mac/Linux: CLI installer

• Connect the USB to the roaster. If you have a USB-A, there is a slot in the back of the roaster. If you want to use a USB-micro, remove the USB from the PCB and insert yours. See the pictures below if unsure.

• Open command prompt (cmd).

  • Detailed: Click the windows symbol, write in cmd in the search bar, and open the program.

• Log in to Particle when in cmd. Either go to particle.io, and create an account or use our demo account:

  • Email: roest@gmail.com (not a real email)

  • Password: roest321

  • Write particle cloud login and press enter. It should look like this once done:

    (The cd.. was used only to go to the root folder for better visibility and is not needed).

• Place the drop handle in the upward position. Remove the top plate if you haven’t already, and turn on the machine.

• In your cmd program, write particle doctor and press enter. The following image is what your window should look like. You’ll be asked to put the device in DFU mode before proceeding.

• To enter DFU mode:

  • Press and hold both the RESET and SETUP buttons simultaneously.

  • Release only the RESET button while continuing to hold the SETUP button.

  • Release the SETUP button once the device begins to blink YELLOW (it first blinks magenta).

    See the image below if unsure.

• Once the roaster is in DFU mode (blinking yellow), press enter. The device will get a system update.

• Once the system update is done, you must put the roaster in DFU mode again. Then press enter to continue.

You will now be asked some questions.

• Select External antenna (arrow down to select) and press enter.

• Select Dynamic IP (already marked) and press enter.

• Select continue to reset WiFi hotspot name in listening mode (press enter).

• Select continue to clear all data in EEPROM storage (press enter).

• Now, the particle doctor will give the unit new wifi credentials and connect the roaster to your wifi. Just press enter to continue to set up Wi-FI.

• Write y and press enter to scan for available Wi-FI.

• Select your Wi-Fi from the list and press enter (in example Bjartemor is the selected Wi-Fi). Enter your password and press enter.

• Resetting server and device keys should not be done, so write y and press enter on the last question. So yes, to Skip resetting keys.

• One last time, the device must be put in DFU mode. Once this is done, press enter.

This should appear:

The roaster will now not have our firmware. But it should connect to the cloud service and download/install our firmware. The led light on the PCB will blink in different patterns and colors during this.

You can now proceed with one of the below guides for giving the roaster credentials:

This is a troubleshooting guide if you’re having issues connecting to or setting up your Wi-Fi when you receive your machine.

ROEST S100/L100 has a built-in Wi-FI module delivered by Particle. This means that the roaster will automatically connect to an available Wi-Fi to which it has been given the name and password.

There are multiple ways to give these credentials to the roaster, and we recommend using a phone. We have our own app for Android users, and iPhone users can use the Particle app.

Critical info:

• The roaster can only be connected to password-protected Wi-Fi. Not an open network.

• Wi-Fi name or password cannot include special characters (only letters and numbers).

• Corporate networks can create problems. Port 1883 must be opened.

Known issues and possible fixes:

• I can’t press the activate button on the Wi-Fi screen.

• The process fails at “claiming the device.”

• The machine stops responding during the process of giving the roaster credentials.

• The process fails during the procedure in the Particle or ROEST Wi-Fi setup app.

• After completing the procedure for setting up WiFi, the roaster still doesn’t connect.

• I can’t find my Wi-Fi in the ROEST app or Particle app.

• I’m not able to find the Photon in the Wi-Fi settings of my phone/computer.

• Both the update and Roest server status are offline.

• Recovery.

I can’t press the activate button on the Wi-Fi screen.

• “ACTIVATE” button is only enabled when the bean drop handle is in an open/upward position.

The process fails at “claiming the device.”

• This is normal and not a problem. ROEST will be the product’s “owner,“ so we can send OTA updates through Particle.

The machine stops responding during the process of giving the roaster credentials.

• Probably a hangup - restart (switch roaster off and on).

• If the problem persists – see recovery.

The process fails during the procedure in the Particle or ROEST Wi-Fi setup app.

• This can be due to several reasons. Very often it helps to restart the roaster and attempt the process again.

• If the problem persists – see recovery.

After completing the procedure for setting up WiFi, the roaster still doesn’t connect.

1. Make sure the antenna is installed.

2. If you entered the wrong password, the roaster would not connect - try again.

3. Restart the roaster and the app to see if this solves the issue. There can be issues with hang-ups.

4. Enter the WiFi menu and press in the middle of the Debug area. You might need to press several times, but the WiFi you’re trying to connect to must appear here. If the WiFi doesn’t appear, try to relocate the roaster closer to the router. See the below picture:

I can’t find my Wi-Fi in the ROEST app or Particle app.

• Make sure the antenna is installed.

I’m not able to find the Photon in the Wi-Fi settings of my phone/computer.

Make sure the WiFi setup is activated on the touch screen

Restart the roaster and try again.

If the roaster fails to make a WiFi connection to the app (either with Android or iPhone) then there might be an issue in the WiFi module.  The best solution is then to reset the module. This requires a computer with Windows and a USB cord. Use Particle Doctor to reset the module.

If the problem persists – see recovery.

Both the update and Roest server status are offline.

This normally means that the roaster is connected to the Wi-Fi, but doesn’t have internet. This can be caused by firewalls or bad Wi-Fi signal.

Recovery

• First, we recommend trying another guide for giving credentials to the roaster. For example, if you have only tried using a phone – then try using a computer with the command prompt instead.

• The next step would be to clear all Wi-Fi credentials.

  • Take off the top panel. Be careful with the cable connected to the encoder.

  • Turn on the roaster and locate the SETUP button on the PCB (see the picture below). Press the button for 10 seconds. It should start blinking blue slowly and then start blinking blue rapidly when finished.

  • Once this procedure is done, new Wi-Fi credentials are needed. Follow the procedure for your device to give the roaster new credentials:

    • With iPhone

    • With Android

    • With command prompt

• If clearing all Wi-Fi credentials and giving the roaster new credentials doesn’t work, see the guide for setting the roaster in safe mode – this can make it easier to connect to Wi-Fi.

• The last resort is to use Particle Doctor to reflash the controller.

A step-by-step guide to troubleshooting a motor issue:

1. The first and simplest step is to check your motor gear settings. Most of our p16 models should have this setting set to 12:1, except for a few early models. Read more about this here, and find out what your correct setting should be.

2. Turn off and unplug your roaster, and remove the top plate and lefthand side panels.

3. If your drum and pulleys are not moving, it could be due to a loose screw in one of the pulleys. Use a 2- and 2.5-millimeter hexagonal key to check all the set screws in the two pulleys.

4. Inspect the RPM proximity sensor while turning the roaster on (but not heating it up). Do not touch any parts during this operation. The proximity sensor should blink red when it registers the RPM plate moving in front of it. If it doesn’t flash red, adjust the distance between the sensor and the RPM plate (turn off the roaster while doing this). It should be close to 1 millimeter. When the sensor has been adjusted, turn on the roaster again and check the following:

   1. If the sensor doesn’t flash red: The sensor must be changed.

   2. If lighting up constantly: The sensor must be changed.

   3. If the sensor blinks when the RPM plate is in front of it, it works normally.

5. If the proximity sensor blinks when the RPM plate is in front of it and your drum moves back and forth, the proximity sensor is most likely placed too far away from the RPM plate and needs to be adjusted. You can use this guide for reference but move it closer to the RPM plate instead of changing the sensor.

6. If you need to change the sensor, follow this guide.

With the drop handle in the downwards position, look at the touchscreen:

If power shows 100%:

• The power connection on the PCB is faulty. Please use the PCB overview (nr. 2 circled in blue) for reference and check that the connection is properly attached.

• Due to the heating element:

  • Not all cables are connected properly. Please remove the top plate and inspect the connection.

  • The heating element is broken. Please follow this guide on how to change it. If you’re having repeated problems with your heating element, please read this post on heating elements and their lifetime.

If power shows 0%:

• No profile has been selected.

• Due to the proximity sensor:

  • There is a message on the screen saying “Hatch Open”, even though you’ve moved the drop handle to the downward position (closed the hatch). This can be due to two things:

    • The distance between the sensor and the drop handle door is too great. If the distance is too great, but the sensor works, a red light should flash if you place a metal object in front of it.

    • The proximity sensor is broken. Please follow this guide on how to change it.
